During her 30-year career at the Broward Sheriff's Office, founder Josefa Benjamin witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking reality of what it looks like to live without purpose. She observed incarcerated individuals who didn’t know their purpose or, in the worst cases, didn’t realize they had one. As the Executive Director of the Department of Detention and Community Programs, Josefa encountered the painful consequences of this lack of direction. She recognized how the absence of purpose led to poor decisions, leaving individuals vulnerable to cycles of despair that impacted not just them, but their families and communities. Without a guiding "why," people were more likely to make choices that deepened their struggles. Witnessing this suffering stirred a deep compassion within Josefa and a conviction that change was not only possible but essential. She identified that prevention—helping individuals uncover their purpose before life’s challenges became overwhelming—could transform lives, offering hope and a path to freedom from poverty and pain.
